  • Potential for bucket damage: Unfortunately, gravity is not your friend here. The clamping force of the forks might bend or damage the bucket when lifting heavy loads especially if the bucket is old and worn. To reduce the load stress on the bucket, wrap chains around the bucket.
  • Reduced lifting capacity: Physics isn’t your friend, either. Clamp-on forks generally don’t lift as well as pin-on fork attachments because the clamping locations extend the load further away from the lift pin, which happens to be the fulcrum in the tractor’s lift system. The result of the extension is reduced leverage due to the increased leverage distance—your tractor will need to use more power to lift an object.

To determine how much weight a ballast box will add, simply find out the cubic foot capacity of the box. For this example we will use a 5 cubic foot capacity ballast box.. Determine how much  the infill material weighs.  Pea gravel weighs 110 pounds per cubic ft x 5 cubic ft. equals 510 pounds. Using an empty box weight of 125 pounds  the total ballast weight would be 510 + 125 = 635 pounds. It is important to match the size of the ballast box filled with the operating load capacity of the tractor loader.

Approximately 6-7 years ago, almost all the subcompact tractors and many of the compact tractors were not equipped with a quick attach connection like the skid steer universal system so selling clamp on plows was a great option for these tractor owners. Since then, the new tractors are being equipped from the factory with the universal quick attach system. Snowplows sales began to make a shift from clamp on to the universal QA mount. The fact is there are still a several hundred thousand tractors in service today that do not have a quick attach system that are candidates for clamp on plows. Snowplow sales are always tied to how much it snows, obviously. This year since more areas in the Midwest and East are seeing increased amounts of snow the activity has picked up and clamp on snowplow sales are doing great. The long-term trend will be toward the universal mount, but it will take several years before the clamp on snowplows see any great reduction simply because there is still a need.

We recently got a nice response from a customer in NJ about his new shrub bucket. The comment was forwarded to us by our dealer Weaver’s Equipment Sales & Service in Vineland, NJ.

Here’s what the customer said.

“The shrub bucket that we got from Earth Turf has been very impressive and is holding up very well! I have put in about 150 trees with it and still going strong.”

The shrub bucket is a 24″ spade type bucket made with 1/4″ steel and heavy reinforcements at the mount. It was designed to help users remove shrubs and small trees, up to 4″ in diameter. The other option is to use the shrub bucket to dig holes for new plantings and then go and pick up the trees or shrubs and place them in the hole. I personally have one at my home and over the years have dug holes for new plantings as well as taken out trees and shrubs that have died. My wife is an avid gardener and every year she wants to move a shrub or two from one location to another. The shrub bucket has been very useful in doing these chores around our property and saves my time and my back. Snow is coming to the eastern US this year according to several sources. The one that has done the best over the years is the Farmer’s Almanac which is very scientific. The last couple of years were fairly light in the east when it comes to snowfall. This year is the first year of the El Nino which is the beginning of a wetter period. When you add to that the predictions of a colder than normal time in the east it sounds like Snow is coming and possible some bad storms. The rest of the US will be similar to last year which did bring a good amount of snow to the upper mid-west and northwest.

So, get ready for a snowy east coast year.
Here are some tips for plowing snow. Never wait for the snow to finish before plowing or you may be snowed in. Every 4-5 inches go out and plow so you can keep moving the snow back. Look for a plow that will easily plow under your mailbox. If you are using a plow attached to your loader, try to push the snow a couple of feet off the driveway especially if it sounds like the storm could dump a foot or two on your property.
One other tip is to make a snow pocket to the left of your drive where the Highway snowplow could push a bunch of snow in your driveway. |How does this work? Just past your mailbox simple push the snow into the grass about three feet back and about 30 foot long. Now when the road plow comes through the big load of snow it is carrying will have a place to clean out before it hits your driveway saving you extra work.
Winter can be a lot of fun and many of the people I talk to enjoy plowing snow but remember to be careful, watch the traffic and always be aware of your surroundings when operating any type of equipment.

Having the right grapple for your compact tractor is an important choice to make to maximize your tractors capabilities. There have been traditionally two distinct types of open brush and log grapples. The first one is the typical root grapple. This style grapple is usually designed with the rear tines terminating on a slight curve just after they reach the ground with a very flat grapple top to close very hard on the material you would be picking up. This will have some limitations on the size of the load since the curved floor at the back is only about 6″ long.

The second type grapple is a long floor grapple where the floor could be 24-30 ” long or more. The lower tine floor usually has a curve on it which can make it harder to getting under the material. Because of the long floor it can put your loader into a tipping situation with your small compact due to the leverage of having a log way out on the end of the floor.
The Hybrid grapple is designed with the operating load capacity of the sub compact tractors in mind. The floor of the Hybrid Grapple is approximately the same length as the bucket floor of your tractor 15″-16″ long. This is important as the manufacturers try to design the loader bucket to work with each compact tractor’s design capabilities.
The hybrid grapple has a heavy-duty 2″x 8″ hydraulic cylinder with a large jaw opening of 36″. because the floor does not curve up at the end it allows users to get under the material they wish to pick up.
This is just common sense.
